Short answer

What valuation services do you offer?

We value businesses, private company shares, trust business interests, partnership interests and goodwill. Common reasons are the 1 July 2027 CGT changes, a sale or purchase, succession, restructures and shareholder exits. We do not value property, vehicles or possessions. Family law matters go to our dedicated family law practice, Family Law Valuations.

Start with the reason, not the report

The same business can carry different values depending on why you are asking. A buyer pricing the whole business, a minority shareholder leaving and a trust recording a figure for tax are three different questions, even with identical profit. So we start with the purpose, the exact interest and the date.

Pick the reason closest to yours below, or start from your sector on the industries we value. If several reasons apply, say so when you request a quote: one engagement can often cover them.

CGT valuations as at 30 June 2027

From 1 July 2027 the 50% CGT discount for Australian resident individuals and trusts (including individuals' shares of partnership gains) is generally replaced, for gains that build up from that date, by cost base indexation, and resident individuals generally pay at least 30% tax on those gains. Australian resident individuals, and trusts with at least one eligible beneficiary, holding a business, shares or units at the end of 30 June 2027 are generally treated as selling them just before 1 July 2027 and buying them back, by default at market value. That is why the date matters.

A valuation is one way to work out that amount, not the only one. The law lets the Government set an apportioning method instead, but that method is still a draft (released for consultation in August 2026, not yet final); your tax adviser decides what applies. Companies can't use the 50% discount, so this rule does not apply to a company's own post-1985 assets. A valuation as at 30 June 2027 is prepared after that date, once your records to 30 June 2027 are available. You can book your place now.

Small business valuation

For an owner-run business with one entity and current financial statements: a café, a plumbing business, a physio clinic, an online store. We work out the profit the business really makes once the owner's wage, one-off costs and personal expenses are adjusted, then test how much of that profit would survive without you. See small business valuation.

Private company shares

When the subject is shares rather than the whole business, the question changes. A 100% holding, a 50% deadlock and a 15% stake in the same company are rarely worth the same amount per share. The constitution, any shareholders agreement and who controls the board all come into it. See private company share valuation and our article on valuing a minority interest.

Businesses held in a trust

Many family businesses sit in a discretionary or unit trust. We value what the trust actually owns: the business itself, units in another trust, or shares in a trading company. Getting that subject right matters more than usual for 30 June 2027, because many trusts are covered by the transitional rule. See trust business valuation.

Goodwill

Goodwill is the value the balance sheet does not show: customers who come back, the name, the systems, the team. Sometimes it has to be separated from plant, stock and working capital, for example when a business is sold as assets rather than shares, or a practitioner joins or leaves a practice. See business goodwill valuation.

Selling a business

Before you list, appoint a broker or answer an approach, an independent value gives you a reference point that does not depend on anyone's commission. It also shows what a buyer will question, while there is time to fix it. See business sale valuation.

Buying a business

An asking price is a starting point, not evidence. We test the earnings the price rests on, how much depends on the outgoing owner, and what the deal actually includes: shares or assets, stock, equipment and any staff entitlements that come with it. See business acquisition valuation.

Succession and estate planning

Handing a business to the next generation, selling to a key employee or planning an estate all need a figure that family members, co-owners and advisers can see the basis for. A documented value makes an unequal split easier to explain. See business succession valuation.

Restructures and transfers between entities

Moving a business from a sole trader into a company, rolling it into a trust or tidying up a group can raise market value questions for tax and stamp duty. Your accountant designs the structure and decides the tax treatment. We provide an independent value for the interest being moved, at the date it moves. See business restructuring valuation.

Annual updates

Some owners and shareholder groups want a value every year: to track progress, keep a buy-sell agreement priced or keep a trust's records current. An update is a fresh valuation at a new date, not last year's report with new numbers, though it is usually quicker because we already know the business.

Ask for it in your quote request and we will quote it in writing.

What we do not value

Independent Business Valuation values businesses and the interests people hold in them. We do not value:

  • Residential or commercial property, including land and buildings a business owns
  • Cars, trucks, boats or other vehicles on their own
  • Plant and equipment as a standalone asset valuation
  • Household contents, jewellery, art, collectibles or other personal possessions

When a business owns its premises, the property usually needs its own valuation from a property valuer. We tell you early if that applies.

Family law, disputes and court

Valuations for a family law property settlement are prepared through our dedicated family law practice, Family Law Valuations. If that is your situation, say so in your quote request and we will point you there.

Shareholder disputes, litigation and other court or tribunal work are quoted separately. A report prepared for commercial or tax purposes is not a court expert report, and court work is its own engagement with its own fee.

What it costs

We charge one fixed fee of $999 + GST for a full valuation report on one business or ownership interest with annual turnover under $10 million, at one valuation date:

If you are an accountant

You keep the tax advice and the client relationship; we provide the independent value. A referring accountant sees a client's matter or documents only with that client's written consent. Partner terms, single referrals and quotes for several clients at once are on for accountants.

More detail is on our process. Tell us your deadline and we will tell you on the call whether we can meet it.

Questions

Do I need a valuation for the 1 July 2027 CGT changes?

Not necessarily. It depends on who owns the business, how it is held and what your tax adviser recommends. The rule does not apply to a company's own post-1985 assets, and a draft apportioning method (not yet final) may in future be an alternative to a valuation. Your tax adviser decides; we provide the value if you need one.

Can you value my shareholding rather than the whole business?

Yes. We value the interest you actually hold, allowing for the constitution, any shareholders agreement and whether the stake carries control.
