What a CGT business valuation costs

A CGT valuation at Independent Business Valuation uses the same fixed fee as any full valuation. What changes the quote is the CGT scope: which interest is being valued, at which date, and how many entities and holdings sit in the structure. Fixed fee, confirmed in writing before we start. No hourly billing and no surprises.

Short answer

How much does a CGT business valuation cost?

For one business or interest with turnover under $2 million or $2 million to $10 million: a fixed $999 + GST. Larger businesses and complex groups are quoted in writing. Each additional entity or interest is $795 + GST, and each additional valuation date is $495 + GST. Every fee is confirmed in writing before work starts.

How a CGT quote is built

The fee table above prices one full valuation: one business or ownership interest, at one valuation date, for one entity. A CGT engagement adds four scope questions, and the answers decide whether your quote is the fixed fee alone or the fixed fee plus add-ons. The fixed fee applies once we confirm the interest, purpose, structure and records fit the fixed-fee scope. Anything outside it is quoted in writing before we start.

The four CGT scope questions
Scope questionWhy it matters for CGTEffect on the quote
What is being valuedFor CGT the asset is what each taxpayer owns: shares, trust units, a partnership interest or the business's assets, such as goodwill.Usually none. The business is analysed once.
The valuation date30 June 2027 for the new rules, or the date of another CGT event your adviser identifies. One date is included. Each additional date is $495 + GST.
How many entitiesA trading company plus a related trust that owns the equipment, for example. Each additional entity is $795 + GST.
How many interestsFamily members, trusts or companies may each hold a parcel needing its own value. Each additional interest is $795 + GST. A larger group is quoted in writing.

Why the interest matters most

If your family trust owns 60 of the 100 shares in a company, the trust owns a parcel of shares, not the business. A 60% holding usually carries control; a 25% holding does not. The report must say which interest it values and how control was treated.

Why the date matters

Australian resident individuals, and trusts with at least one eligible beneficiary, holding a relevant asset at the end of 30 June 2027 are generally treated as having sold it and bought it back at market value just before 1 July 2027, which is why that date counts. If your adviser also wants a value at another date, such as a planned transfer between related entities, it is $495 + GST: the business has already been analysed, so it is not a second valuation.

Pricing a family group: an example

CGT structures are rarely one owner and one company. Here is how an ordinary family structure would be scoped.

If the family also ran a second operating business, or turnover were over $10 million, the engagement would move outside the fixed-fee scope and be quoted in writing once we understand the structure.

What the fee includes

  • A scoping call with you or your accountant, then an engagement letter fixing the interests, dates, fee and information needed.
  • Analysis of the financial statements to the valuation date, adjusted for owner salaries, one-off items and related-party rent.
  • A method suited to the business, cross-checked against a second approach where the evidence allows.
  • A market value conclusion for each interest in scope, including how a controlling or minority holding was treated.
  • A report setting out the evidence, assumptions and reasoning, so your adviser can follow it years later when the asset is sold.
  • Review and signature by a suitably qualified business valuer at Valuation Group.
  • Secure document collection through the upload link on your matter, never by email.

What is not included

  • Tax advice. Whether to use a valuation or, once it is finalised, a government apportioning method is a decision for you and your tax adviser.
  • Land and buildings. Where the structure owns property, a property valuer values it and we can use that figure as an input.
  • Court or tribunal reports. A separate engagement with its own fee.
  • Family law matters. These go to our dedicated family law practice, Family Law Valuations.
  • An audit. We test the information for reasonableness, and you sign a representation letter before the final report.

What moves a CGT quote, and what does not

  • Turnover. Turnover for the latest full year decides whether the business is inside the fixed-fee scope and which delivery time applies. Near a boundary, we confirm it before you commit.
  • Records that are behind. Statements a year behind mean more to reconstruct. We tell you if that changes the fee before anything starts.
  • Specialist analysis. Trading losses, reliance on a forecast, or intellectual property carrying most of the value may move the engagement to a written quote.
  • Holdings found later. If another trust or holding turns up mid-engagement, we pause and confirm any change in writing first.

What does not move the fee: the value we reach, or how much tax may later depend on it. A fee unrelated to the answer is part of what keeps the valuation independent.

Booking now, with the report after 30 June 2027

A valuation as at 30 June 2027 is prepared after that date, once your records to 30 June 2027 are available. You can book your place now.

Nobody can finish a report as at 30 June 2027 before that date, whatever they charge. What you can do now is settle the scope and get the records in order.

  1. Now: scope and bookWe confirm which interests and dates are in scope, and put the scope and fee in writing.
  2. Before 30 June 2027: prepareYou work through our records checklist, capturing what is hard to rebuild later: customer and contract lists, the equipment and finance register, the lease, and the share or unit register.
  3. After 30 June 2027: valueOnce your accounts to 30 June 2027 are ready, you upload them through the secure link on your matter.

Delivery is 2 business days for a business with turnover under $2 million and 3 business days for turnover $2 million to $10 million. Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received, and pauses while we wait for answers to our questions or your signed representation letter. So the timing depends mostly on when your year-end figures are finalised. Tell us your deadline and we will tell you on the call whether we can meet it.

Every 30 June 2027 valuation shares one date, so work is likely to bunch up once year-end accounts are ready. Booking early holds your place in that queue.

Check whether you need a valuation first

The cheapest valuation is the one you do not need. A valuation is one way to set the 30 June 2027 amount, not the only one. Your tax adviser decides:

  • From 1 July 2027, the 50% CGT discount for individuals and trusts (including partners' shares of partnership gains) is generally replaced, for gains that build up after that date, by cost base indexation for inflation, and Australian resident individuals pay at least 30% tax on those capital gains, with some exceptions. Gains built up before then generally keep the old treatment.
  • Market value just before 1 July 2027 is the default. Once the Government finalises its apportioning method (still a draft in October 2026), you may be able to choose it instead, generally in the tax return for the year the asset is sold.
  • Companies can't use the 50% discount, so the rule for individuals and trusts does not reach a company's own assets, except any it has held since before 20 September 1985. Shares in a private company held by an individual or a trust may still be in scope.
  • The small business CGT concessions continue where the conditions are met.

The short check below helps you frame the question for your adviser, and our answer on whether a valuation is needed goes further.

Could 30 June 2027 matter for you?

Five quick questions. No names or contact details. General information only, not tax advice.

Question 1 of 5: Who owns the business?

Whoever holds the business assets, or the shares or units in it. Sole traders: choose me personally.

General information about the 1 July 2027 CGT changes, not tax advice. We value businesses and business interests; your tax adviser applies the law to your circumstances.

For accountants scoping client work

The same fixed fee, add-ons and four scope questions apply to each client engagement.

Accountant partners pay the same fixed fee of $999 + GST, with partner benefits instead of a discount: priority scheduling, batch handling and consent-based status updates. See the Accountant Partner Program. If you have a list of clients, a bulk quotation request lets us scope them together. A referring accountant sees a client's matter only with that client's written consent.

Questions

Is GST included in the CGT valuation fee?

No. Every fee is plus GST, including the add-ons: $795 + GST for each additional entity or interest and $495 + GST for each additional valuation date.

My spouse and I each own half the shares. Is that two fees?

Each holding is a separate interest. Both can usually be covered in one engagement and one report, with the second holding priced as an add-on at $795 + GST. We confirm the scope and fee in writing before we start.

Is a CGT valuation priced differently from a sale valuation?

The fixed fee is the same, because valuing the business is the same work. What differs is scope: a CGT valuation is often for a particular holding at a fixed date, sometimes for several family members or entities. The add-ons price those differences.

Do you offer a cheaper estimate for CGT?

Our published fixed fee is for a full valuation report. A calculation or limited-scope engagement is not a full valuation report, and we say which one you are getting before you engage us.

Does a company need a 30 June 2027 valuation?

The company's own assets are generally not affected, because companies can't use the 50% CGT discount (pre-1985 assets aside). Shares in a private company held by an individual or a trust may be, so the question is usually about the shareholders. Your tax adviser decides.

What if my accountant has not finished the 30 June 2027 accounts?

Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received, and pauses while we wait for answers to our questions or your signed representation letter. For a 30 June 2027 valuation, the report follows your year-end accounts. Booking early holds your place and lets us review the other records in the meantime.
