What makes a business valuation independent.

Independent means the valuer has no stake in the number. Our fee is fixed in writing before we see the figures and does not move with the result. We are not paid on the outcome of a sale, we do not act as your advocate in a negotiation, and we do not prepare your tax return. That separation is what lets other people, such as your accountant, a buyer or a co-owner, read the report as a reasoned opinion rather than a negotiating position.

What an independent business valuation covers

Value is a judgement. Ours comes with the reasoning.

About us

Independent Business Valuation is part of Valuation Group. We value businesses and business interests, separately from your accountant and your advisers, and we set out the method, the evidence and the key assumptions behind every number.

We do not give tax, legal or financial advice. Your advisers use our report; they decide what it means for you.

04CGT 2027

30 June 2027 matters. Understand what your business was worth.

From 1 July 2027 the 50% CGT discount for individuals, trusts and partnerships generally gives way, for growth from that date, to cost base indexation, and Australian resident individuals generally pay at least 30% tax on those capital gains, including gains that reach them through a trust or partnership. Growth up to 30 June 2027 can generally keep the discount. Your tax adviser decides how the 30 June 2027 figure is set.

The discount changes.

04.2

Not everyone needs a valuation.

Australian resident individuals and trusts with at least one beneficiary who could make a discount capital gain are generally treated as selling and buying back their assets at market value just before 1 July 2027. A valuation is one way to show that value. The Government is also preparing an apportionment method that some owners may be able to choose instead; it was still a draft in October 2026. Companies sit outside this rule, except for assets held since before 20 September 1985. Your tax adviser decides.

04.3

Records made now are better evidence.

A value as at 30 June 2027 rests on the records to that date. Keep them, and book your valuation early.

Drag the point on the date line. The higher the value at 30 June 2027, the more of the growth sits on the earlier side of the change.

07Questions

Questions owners ask.

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call 0433 475 518.

How much does a business valuation cost?

One fixed fee of $999 + GST for a full valuation report on one business or ownership interest with annual turnover under $10 million. Groups of entities, several interests, disputes and larger businesses are quoted in writing before we start. Fixed fee, confirmed in writing before we start. No hourly billing and no surprises.

How long does a valuation take?

2 business days for turnover under $2 million, and 3 business days for turnover $2 million to $10 million. Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received, and pauses while we wait for answers to our questions or your signed representation letter. Tell us your deadline and we will tell you on the call whether we can meet it.

What information do you need?

Usually the last three years of financial statements and tax returns, recent management accounts, the ownership structure and a short description of the business, its customers and its people. We confirm the exact list when we scope the work. Financial documents come only through the secure upload link on your matter, never by email.

Can you value shares in a private company?

Yes. We value the business inside the company first, then the shares, taking into account the size of the holding and any rights or restrictions in the constitution or shareholders agreement.

Can I get a valuation as at 30 June 2027?

Yes. A valuation as at 30 June 2027 is prepared after that date, once your records to 30 June 2027 are available. You can book your place now. Before then we can confirm the scope and the fee, and help you get the records in order with your accountant.

Is a CGT valuation needed for every business?

No. The transitional rule applies to Australian resident individuals and trusts with at least one beneficiary who could make a discount capital gain, including individuals through a partnership. Companies are outside it, except for assets held since before 20 September 1985, although shareholders who are individuals or trusts may be caught on their shares. Market value just before 1 July 2027 is the default. The Government is preparing an apportionment method that may be available instead, but it was still a draft in October 2026. The small business CGT concessions continue where the conditions are met. Whether a valuation suits you is a question for your tax adviser.

What is the difference between a valuation and a calculation engagement?

A valuation engagement is a full analysis of the business with a reasoned conclusion of value. A calculation engagement is narrower: the valuer applies procedures agreed with you, which generally do not cover everything a full valuation requires, so the result may differ from a full valuation. A calculation is never marketed as a full valuation report: we say which one you are getting before you engage us.

Know the number, and the reasoning behind it.

Tell us what the business does, why you need the valuation and roughly what it turns over. We confirm the scope and the fixed fee in writing before anything starts.
